Western to be host to powwow on Saturday

A powwow and full day of dancing, drumming and song wraps up Indigenous Awareness Week at Western University on Saturday. Western offers a wide range of services and supports for indigenous students, and this powwow is a colourful and cultural exclamation point to a week of celebrations that honour our partnership.

WHAT: 11th Annual Powwow at Western University, organized by the Indigenous Students’ Association
WHEN: Saturday, March 25, 2017, 11 – 6 p.m.
WHERE: Mustang Lounge, Main Floor of University Community Centre

OF NOTE: Media may wish to cover the unique pageantry and ceremony of the Grand Entry at 11 a.m. The powwow begins at noon and will also feature a Smoke Dance contest and host drumming by the Charging Horse Drum Group of Peterborough.

A word about protocol: Powwow etiquette includes: stand and remove any hats during the Grand Entry; reserve seats closest to the drumming circle for singers, dancers and drummers; stand, remove hats and refrain from taking recordings during all honour songs or veteran songs or when an eagle feather is being retrieved from the dance circle; do not carry babies or infants while dancing; do not touch a dancer’s regalia; and listen to the Master of Ceremonies for specific additional instructions.
