During his 2017 federal budget speech, Finance Minister Bill Morneau alluded to the fact Canadian families are worried about the future, worried what opportunities lie ahead for their children and what the workforce will look like.
For Paul de Jong, president of the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada, the federal government aims to quell these concerns by making various budget commitments in the area of skills training and education with a particular focus on underrepresented groups, such as women and indigenous people.
According to the budget, about $5.2 billion will be invested for skills development, though construction isn’t mentioned specifically. It states $225 million over four years and a further $75 million per year after that will establish a new organization to support skills development in Canada.
