Attawapiskat First Nation in Canada Plagued By Suicides
Five children tried to commit suicide Friday at the Attawapiskat First Nation in Canada, according to Chief Bruce Shisheesh. The attempts came after the remote aboriginal community declared a state of emergency earlier this month, in response to 11 of its members attempting suicide in one weekend and 28 trying to do so in March. Since September, 101 people in the Attawapiskat First Nation have attempted suicide. Why are the suicide rates among aboriginal youth so high? We look at the Attawapiskat suicide crisis on the Lip News with Melvin Robert and Nik Zecevic.
