Job Description:

  • Develop and implement childcare programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
  • Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs and taking children to local points of interest, provide opportunities to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and prepare reports for parents, guardians or daycare consultants
  • Knowledge of Day Nurseries Act
  • Knowledge of licensing regulations
  • Knowledge of guidelines for challenging behaviour
  • Establish guidelines for behavior
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers working with children
  • Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or problems with parents and other staff members
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and wellbeing of children
  • Bathe, diaper and feed infants and toddlers,
  • Support early childhood educators in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
  • Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing crafts
  • Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods
  • Submit written observations on children to early childhood educators or supervisors
  • Discuss progress and problems of children at staff meetings
  • Supervise staff, trainees or volunteers
  • Order supplies and equipment
  • Assist early childhood educators or supervisors in keeping records
  • Maintain daycare equipment and assist in housekeeping and cooking duties
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of other early childhood educators and early childhood educator assistants
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children
  • Plan and organize activities for school-age children in childcare programs before and after regular school hours
  • Help with housekeeping duties
  • Moving of furniture and equipment to develop appropriate playing and learning spaces for children
  • Lifting, carrying, holding, bending towards children to change them, help them, comfort them, and interacting with them, daily



– Education: Early Childhood Education bachelor’s degree or college diploma required

– Child Care Services (AECENL) Certification Level 1 or higher required

– Experience:  Experience an asset

– Valid first aid certificate is required

– Child protection record check (child youth and family services) is required

– Certificate of conduct with vulnerable sector check is required (RNC -Royal Newfoundland Constabulary- or local police check)

– Immunization record is required


Salary: $14.00 to $15.50 per hour, 40 hours per week


Important Information:

Flexibility on schedule is required. Shifts are determined at the time of employment, they can change according to the enrollment requirements. Employees work from Monday to Friday, the possible shifts are: 8:00am to 4:30pm, or 8:30am to 5:00pm, or 9:00am to 5:30pm as required based on the demands of enrollment.
